Giclee'

(Pronounced gee-clay) A Giclee' is an image that is created or scanned into a computer then printed on a high speed ink-jet printer.  Special inks produce incredibly true colors.  A Giclee' can be either original art (when the image is originally created in the computer) or a reproduction (when an image is scanned into a computer, then printed).

Lithograph

Artwork printed from a stone or metal plate or other flat surface.  The artist uses a greasy substance to draw on the surface of the plate; only these greasy areas will accept ink.  Once the plate is inked, high quality paper is laid over it and the package is pulled through the press.  To create a lithograph with a number of different colors, the paper must go through the press each time a new color is to be added.  Lithographs are usually printed in editions of several hundred and each one is actually considered a "multiple original" as each print is actually pulled from the press by the artist or someone being closely supervised by the artist.  Each print is signed and numbered.

Signed and Numbered

At the bottom of these prints the artist pencils in their signature and numbers the print.  Usually the numbers appear one over the other.  The first or top number indicates the number of that individual print, the bottom or second number indicates the number of prints in that edition.
